Happy Monday!

Ok, so maybe it is not really Monday but it sure does feel like it doesn't it? I love when there is a holiday that makes a week shorter...only 3 more days left this week....Wahoooooooo!!

So talking about Monday, I hope you made the best of your MLK Jr. Day. I think its a great reminder of what we should be striving for as a nation and a wonderful reason to go out and put your words into action.

I had the opportunity to volunteer at City Sprouts, a community garden that serves North Omaha. Our responsibilities were basically cleaning and organizing the house that they use.

After a morning of volunteering, I headed over to UNMC with the other Public Health girls for an MLK commemoration ceremony. The event featured violinist, Daniel Davis, and Othello Meadows giving the keynote speech. Daniel was absolutely amazing , he plays the electric violin and has performed for the likes of President Obama, Oprah, Jamie Foxx...

And I have listened to Othello speak before at the TedX Omaha talk and he blew me away then. His speech at this event was just as motivating. It was entitled, "Desanitizing the Message of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr." He spoke about how we have changed the image of MLK to be something that we are comfortable with, that we can build monuments about...but its the radical, the call to action, the change that we talk so much about but never make happen, that we choose to ignore because its inconvenient for us. It was a great wake up call to remember the "change" we all say we believe in.

Check out his speech from the TedX Omaha talk here!
